DIY Kid Activities: Beeswax Candles

Rolled and decorated beeswax candles! (www.sewcando.com)

This activity is a simple one, but kids love learning how candles are made and customizing their own!  It’s especially fun for sleepovers or rainy nights: who needs electricity when you can eat dinner or play games by candlelight?!  Just make sure to monitor kids closely whenever there are flames involved.

Time: 10 minutes.

Materials: Sheets of beeswax and wicks (these can be purchased online), scissors, matches, blow dryer (optional).

Adult Prep:

  1. Cut the beeswax sheets into smaller strips if needed.
  2. Cut the wicks to an appropriate length.

Kids’ Activity:

  1. Adults will probably want to monitor and assist throughout.  Place the wick at the edge of the beeswax sheet and start rolling tightly. If the wax is hard and cracks when you roll it, you may want to warm and soften it with the blow dryer.
  2. Roll until the candle is finished.
  3. You can also cut out small decorative shapes from the wax to add some personality.  Just press them on to the finished candle, using the blow dryer if needed.
  4. Light the candles with a match and enjoy the light!
